Nimble Storage A/NZ Grows Beyond Expectations in First Six Months with More than 50 Systems Deployed

Growth Attributed to Significant Customer Benefits of Unique Hybrid-Flash Architecture and Ground-Breaking New Features

Sydney, Australia - Apr 29, 2013 – Nimble Storage has announced growth beyond expectations for its Australia and New Zealand (A/NZ) operation, which officially opened just six months ago. Nimble attributes this unprecedented growth to customers realising the genuine business benefits of its hybrid-flash storage systems over traditional disk-centric platforms. Nimble’s architecture is built from the ground up to take advantage of solid-state drives (SSDs) as well as low-cost high-density hard-disk drives (HDDs).

Since the A/NZ operation began in late 2012, the team has grown to 16 employees and recruited more than 30 experienced channel partners across the region. Nimble also expanded into Southeast Asia when it established a presence in Singapore in January 2013. In A/NZ, the team has secured more than 50 deployments spanning a wide range of workloads including databases, Microsoft Exchange, VDI, and file services – most often in virtualised environments.

These customer engagements include some of the region’s most prestigious enterprises in the financial sector, government agencies, retailers, universities, telcos, media companies and professional services organisations. Nimble’s largest deployment in Australia is with a bank utilising Nimble arrays to store 30,000 Microsoft Exchange mailboxes. Nimble’s solution for this customer comprised 112 spindles (90 high-density disks and 20 SSDs) taking up only half a rack (21RU) of space. At less than one-tenth the amount of power consumption, the Nimble solution was chosen against six full racks of storage from a large competitor.

Nimble InfoSight: Intelligent Data Collection and Analysis Engine Provides Proactive Support

Nimble has also just announced a new set of services for its storage arrays called InfoSight™. Built on powerful analytics, systems modeling and intelligent, predictive algorithms, InfoSight harnesses the power of the cloud and deep data to simplify and streamline activities across the storage lifecycle, enabling customers to realise the promise of operational efficiency.

Unlike typical “phone-home” systems, InfoSight’s centralised data collection engine collects comprehensive system data spanning various characteristics including performance, capacity, data protection and system health. System data is securely collected at frequent, five-minute intervals, resulting in a rich and deep set of data, totaling more than 30 million sensor values per array, per day. The system data is analysed on a continuous basis by a sophisticated engine that delivers powerful support, monitoring, reporting, forecasting and planning capabilities to customers. Customer data is never collected as part of this process.

More Efficient Private Cloud Deployments with Pre-Validated Architecture Based on Microsoft Windows Server and System Center

Nimble has announced a new validated reference architecture for private cloud deployments on Microsoft® and Cisco technology. The highly available, high-performance Microsoft Fast Track virtualisation reference architecture was validated to support up to 75 virtual machines (VMs). The Nimble Storage SmartStack for Microsoft Windows Server and System Center reference architecture consists of a three-rack unit (3U). Nimble Storage CS200 Series, the Cisco UCS® C-Series rack-mount server platform, Microsoft Windows Server 2012 with Hyper-V, and Microsoft System Center 2012.

The Microsoft Private Cloud Fast Track is a reference architecture for building private clouds. It combines Microsoft software, consolidated guidance and validated configurations with computing, network and storage architecture partners. It utilises the core capabilities of the Windows Server 2012 operating system and Hyper-V technology to deliver the building blocks of a private cloud infrastructure.

“The team has laid a very strong foundation for our business in Australia and New Zealand. There are several characteristics which make A/NZ stand out from other markets. A/NZ organisations are much more willing to adopt new technologies if the benefits are compelling. Private and public cloud deployments are popular, with most large enterprises at varying stages of deployment and numerous service providers offering infrastructure as a service. Our value proposition, based on delivering efficient storage infrastructure, resonates very clearly with A/NZ enterprises and we have seen strong adoption with service providers,” said Suresh Vasudevan, CEO of Nimble Storage.

“I’m delighted by the local market response to Nimble. The innovative technology Nimble creates, combined with the strength of our local team and partner network are the ingredients for our success in A/NZ. Once customers experience Nimble technology in action, realise the simplicity of management, the increased performance and reduced capital costs, it’s very difficult to find a reason not to choose the Nimble solution. Our partners, many of whom have sold competing technologies, also clearly understand the disruptive potential of our solutions. I’m very pleased with the position we’re in currently and look forward to the next 12 months as we continue to grow the business and show the market the next evolutionary stage in data storage,” said Peter O’Connor, Vice President Asia Pacific, Nimble Storage.

“We were quickly impressed not just with the Nimble Storage hardware and the technology behind it, but the support and services that came with the solution were unlike anything we’d ever seen from a vendor – particularly in the storage space. Nimble allowed us to achieve a 30 per cent cost saving compared to other vendors. On top of that, other vendors required us to purchase the physical storage unit and then pay separately for software licenses. Nimble wraps it all into one solution and cost, including the software and support. It was up and running straight out of the box and we didn’t require a massive infrastructure to go around it. We’ve reduced a full rack of storage down to just 6RU, so we’re using less than a quarter of a rack for twice the storage space. And the power savings are dramatic,” said Dana Teahan, Chief Information and Digital Officer, Australian Institute of Management.
